Uganda - recovering from civil war |

|
Northern Uganda's civil conflict exacted a terrible toll on its people, especially the children. FTC is supporting rural communities as the people begin to return to their land, and rebuild their lives. Support to SchoolsIn conjunction with the United Nations World Food Programme, FTC is providing food to children through their schools. At the same time, our de-worming programme helps children get the most from their food - a child with worms loses around a third of its food intake. It costs just 40p to provide two six-monthly tablets, which keep a child worm-free for one year.

FTC's tree nursery programme encourages children to nurture and protect trees, and take home the simple message; if you cut down a tree, plant two more. With songs and poems, they learn how important trees are to the environment, as well as everyday life.

Your help can provide saplings, tools, and a visit from a Feed The Children trainer. See the Alternative Gifts section of our online shop for more information. Support to abducted childrenThe Lord's Resistance Army routinely raided villages, looted goods and kidnapped the children. These abducted children were trained to kill, and forced to commit atrocities. As a military tactic, it was effective; many people would run away rather than fight an army of children. Feed The Children's safe house in Gulu, Uganda, supports around 75 children who have been rescued from the Lord's Resistance Army. They are frightened, frequently injured, and traumatised by what they have been made to do. Many of the girls - young teenagers themselves - come back with babies. Our support includes care and protection, and counselling both for the young people, and for their families - who are often reluctant to take them back. We also help to support the very young mothers who are living in the community. Many of the rebel groups have now disbanded, or moved into neighbouring Sudan - but our support to their young victims will continue. Street childrenWar and poverty in Uganda mean that there are many thousands of orphans and abandoned children living on the streets. Feed The Children provides food, shelter, clothing, blankets and educational materials. Older children can receive vocational training in skills such as bicycle repair, carpentry, farming and tailoring, helping them towards independence. Grant from the BandAid TrustWe are delighted that two applications to the BandAid Trust were recently approved, giving us £123,000 to give a much needed boost to our Uganda projects.
