Malawi - thirsty for help

Malawi is a small country in southern Africa, bordering Lake Nyasa, and is one of the least developed countries of the world.  Its poor economy, and the erratic weather for the last few years has made life a relentless struggle.  90% of Malawi's people live in rural poverty, dependent on subsistence farming.  Most people do not have access to clean water, and water-borne diseases are rife.

Recently, the prolonged drought has caused catastrophic failure of many crops, including maize, the staple food of the area.  Almost one million Malawians - around 14% of the population - are HIV positive.

Emergency Aid

Feed The Children has provided food, water filtration kits, blankets, toiletries and educational materials to communities in desperate need.

Support for special needs

Poor nutrition causes birth defects, brain damage and stunted growth.  We are helping nearly 1000 children with special needs by providing rehabilitation facilities such as speech therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and educational services.  Older young people can receive vocational training, to help them into employment.

Skills for life

Inadequate farming methods add to the difficulties of Malawi's rural population.  Feed The Children provides training in goat-keeping, nutrition, bakery, carpentry and tailoring.  This training helps subsistence farmers to develop skills that increase their income, and their ability to provide for themselves in the future.

Seeds, tools and fertilisers provided by Feed The Children mean that farmers who have lost their crops can start again.
