C-ARP Child Amputee Rehabilitation Programme
Feed The Children (UK) has adopted 12 amputee children, who lost limbs as a direct result of the earthquake in Pakistan on October 8th 2005. The aim is to ensure the children are fully rehabilitated in to their communities and schools. Each child has received a prosthetic limb, which will need to be replaced as they grow in to adulthood. Social workers help the children and families.
One of our children is little Abdullah, who was born in 2004. He lost his leg above the knee. The charity’s support has meant he now has a prosthetic leg and has received help at the Balakot Rehab Centre. He now attends school as well, vital for his future.
The programme is run by the Murshid Hospital and Health Care Centre, supported by Feed the Children (UK) and others. In total 72 children have been registered against a target of 100.
Another 28 have been identified and they will be served as funds become available.
During 2009 the focus will be to counsel other community members including parents, so that they participate fully in the development and progress of their children and do not consider them as a burden.

All children are under professional management of qualified prosthetists graduating from PIPOS, Peshawar the premier regional institute certified by ISPO. Every child registered will enjoy its right to mobility. Each has received or will receive a modular artificial limb on a replacement basis until adulthood. In some cases the stump will be refashioned so that the child can use the artificial limb with ease and without any discomfort.
Under the ‘No Child Left Behind’ goal, the programme will continue to emphasize formal school enrolment and support beneficiaries in both cash and kind to avoid dropouts. If for any reason the going gets tough, individuals will be helped to acquire a skill or a profession to facilitate their future livelihood. Those running the programme on the ground work closely with the communities to bring about an attitudinal change in how society treats these children. This remains a continuing challenge.
